As one of the largest insurance providers in the U.S., Humana provides health insurance to over 13 million Americans. The insurance company is trusted by individuals, families, seniors, military personnel and self-employed individuals. If you have health coverage through Humana, you can expect some coverage for substance abuse treatment services. How much is covered depends on your individual policy and the state you live in.

Once you have the information you need, you can move forward with getting professional treatment services.
What are the Benefits of Having Humana Insurance?
Each insurance company is unique, and Humana is no exception. The insurance provider has a behavioral health program that addresses mental health disorders and substance abuse disorders. This program is a subsidiary of Humana. Call 800-777-6330 to learn more about this program and how it can help you find a treatment center that addresses mental illness, substance abuse or both (dual diagnosis).
There are a number of benefits to carrying coverage through Humana. For example:
- The program will coordinate all care on your behalf, including detox, rehabilitation and hospitalization.
- A behavioral health network is provided to members, making it easy to choose reputable doctors, hospitals and dual diagnosis treatment centers.
- A number of tools and resources are offered to members through Humana. The insurance provider uses these programs to monitor progress and coordinate care.
- If members have questions about mental health or substance use disorders, they can call and speak to a knowledgeable person.
What Type of Treatment Does Humana Usually Cover?
The treatment that Humana will cover is based on your policy and the state you live in. Generally speaking, plans with high deductibles and low premiums offer the least coverage. Plans with low deductibles and high premiums tend to cover more.
Even if you have a plan with high monthly premiums, you still have to meet your deductible before treatment services are covered. Most likely, you will have copays that you will be responsible for as well. Nevertheless, having insurance can make quality drug and alcohol treatment affordable and attainable for the average American.
Here are some of the services that Humana may cover under your policy:
- Medical detox
- Medication for withdrawal symptoms
- Prescription medications to treat a co-occurring condition
- Inpatient treatment
- Outpatient treatment
- Family, group and individual therapy
In-Network vs Out-of-Network Treatment Facilities
As you may already know, choosing in-network doctors is important. If you’ve been sick or injured before and needed a specialist, you were probably referred to a list of doctors based on your insurance plan. Before selecting a treatment center, you want to be sure that they are in network and contracted with your insurance provider.
PPO plans tend to have the least restrictions when selecting a doctor. There are usually many physicians and specialists to choose from. Sometimes, PPO plans will cover out-of-network care as well, but at a much lower rate. On the other hand, HMO plans tend to cover more of their in-network services because they have an arrangement with them. But, these plans are more limiting in the doctors you can choose.
Your insurance policy will work in the same way for treatment centers. If you find an inpatient or outpatient program that is in network, it will probably be covered at a higher percentage than one that is out-of-network. In some cases, out-of-network treatment centers aren’t covered at all. Again, do your research in advance to avoid being in this predicament.
Can I Choose a Treatment Center in Any State?
Some good news is that Humana does not differentiate based on location, which means you can find in-network treatment facilities all over the country. Whether you want to seek treatment locally or halfway around the U.S., you can expect a decent selection of treatment centers. Some people prefer staying close to home while others appreciate a fresh environment – free from distraction.
It is worth pointing out that Humana does its research before networking with treatment centers. To ensure that members are getting the highest quality care for their addiction, Humana only works with facilities that use methodologies backed by science and research. Do not expect your insurance to cover luxury rehabs, executive treatment or New Age therapies. Private facilities that dabble in experimental treatment approaches are also not supported by the insurance company.
Paying for Treatment with Humana Insurance
Monto Recovery Center is a treatment center that specializes in dual diagnosis treatment and substance abuse treatment. We offer three levels of care:
- Partial hospitalization. Our partial hospitalization program includes treatment five hours a day for five days a week. There is a minimum of 20 hours a week for this program.
- Intensive outpatient. With our IOP, treatment is received five hours a day, three days a week. We expect a minimum of 9 hours per week for each client.
- General outpatient. This program is a good fit for those who have already received some treatment. It involves one individual counseling session a week, and one group counseling session a week.
As you can imagine, the more treatment you receive, the higher the costs. General outpatient treatment is usually most affordable, whereas partial hospitalization will be more costly. Don’t be tempted to choose the least expensive form of treatment, however. Work with our admissions counselors to find the best treatment. This will give you the best chances for a complete recovery while actually saving costs in the long run.
